  1. Otters schmotters!
I spent hours getting midged in Kyle Rhea “otter” (=seal) hide. No otters.
I arrived at An Cladach bothy on Islay the day after someone had written “Lovely to see the otter family playing on the rocks in front of the bothy” in the book. Me? No otters. Playtime was over.
I went to Kelvingrove and whilst wandering around the Natural History section noticed two empty plinths – the otters had been removed for conservation work. I couldn’t even spot a stuffed one in a museum…
It became a bit of a legendary failure on my part, and it wasn’t until I was 40 years old when I finally saw one. My friend had decided one dreich morning to go wild swimming in Innominate Tarn on Haystacks after we had stayed at Black Sail. Finalmente! He jumped in and suddenly there was an indignant otter paddling furiously in the opposite direction! Hurrah. I even have (long lens) camera photos to prove it.

Wild cats on the other hand? I’ve got no chance.

Thanks for the blogs and the website, your books are hopefully arriving in my stocking this Christmas.

    Dave
