John D. Burns talks to Search and rescue team member, Kelvin Bull, about his work with the team of volunteers responding to emergency call outs on Dartmoor.

Known for its wild landscape and unpredictable weather, Dartmoor is unique in terms of a being high upland area surrounded by large areas of high population. This ease of access means that many visitors come to the area and are sometimes ill prepared for the challenges they face. It’s for this reason that Dartmoor Search and Rescue have to be prepared for any eventuality and be able to respond quickly to emergency situations.

Kelvin Bull

Dartmoor Search & Rescue – Ashburton is a search and rescue team of highly skilled and professional volunteer team members that is part of the Dartmoor Rescue Group (DRG). DRG was started in 1968 to assist the Police with the search for missing or injured walkers and climbers within the 365 square miles of the national park.

Dartmoor is famous for its tors, rocky outcrops that dot the landscape. It’s also known for its ponies, a population of horses that live wild on the moor.

One of the hazards of Dartmoor is the mist that can rise without warning and extremely rapidly, making navigation extremely hazardous. the mist was famously captures in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s tale of the Hound of The Baskerville’s.
